No Rose for Barbarella

Universal Studios has taken one giant leap back from backing the remake of "Barbarella." The movie, which was set to be directed by "Sin City" boss Robert Rodriguez, was also set to star his new fiancee, Rose McGowan.

A source tells the NY Observer's Transom the studio was unhappy about the casting choice, and when Robert refused to find someone else, the studio's only option was to drop the deal altogether. A Rose by any other name -- will not do!

Rodriguez has denied these claims and said that the reason for the parting of ways was all about budget, saying that the original backing offered by Universal was $60 million, but by shooting time, costs had ballooned to $72 million.

TMZ contacted reps for McGowan and Rodriguez, but have yet to receive comment.

3. If true, great move by Universal. McGowen is one of the last actresses that I would ever consider for that role. IMO, McGowen is a marginal actress at best. You need a tall, stacked, beautiful woman to play Barbarella.

12. Rose is too old, haggard and wonky faced to do this. Jane Fonda hated making the exploitive vulgar movie. Even if you added the creature of the black lagoon as a comic- romantic interest for Rose it wouldn't work.

13. Regarding all the McGowan/Rodriguez stories: why is everyone blaming ONLY the female (in this case, Rose McGowan) for the breakup of Rodriguez's marriage? Doesn't he take some responsibility in that area? If he didn't want to leave his wife, then NO WOMAN could have "seduced" him away. There are plenty of men who are VERY tempted but they say no because they are truly in love with and committed to their wives. Rodriguez obviously had problems in his marriage to begin with. Not saying that sleeping with a married man is the best way to go, and I'm not particularly a RM fan, but there shouldn't be this double standard of "the woman is always the homewrecker".
